Our standard
The Institute teaches rights alongside responsibilities. Education and documentation should be lawful, safety-conscious, accurate, and respectful of the privacy and dignity of everyone involved — including members of the public and public employees doing difficult jobs.
What we expect
- Act lawfully and follow applicable federal, state, and local laws and venue rules.
- Document calmly — prioritize distance, preparation, de-escalation, and safety.
- Respect the rights, privacy, and dignity of others, including bystanders and officials.
- Publish responsibly: verify before sharing, provide context, and correct errors.
- Protect sensitive information and avoid exposing private data without clear public interest.
- Treat fellow participants, instructors, staff, and volunteers with respect.
What is not allowed
The Institute does not encourage, support, or tolerate any of the following in connection with our programs, resources, scholarships, or events:
- Trespass, obstruction, or interference with public services.
- Harassment, threats, intimidation, or incitement.
- Doxxing, impersonation, or targeting private individuals.
- Evidence manipulation or knowingly publishing false information.
- Unsafe confrontation or provoking conflict for entertainment value.
- Partisan campaign activity conducted as part of our nonprofit programs.
- Discrimination or harassment based on protected characteristics.
Scholarships and participation
Scholarship recipients and program participants agree to this Code, to event safety rules, and to lawful participation expectations. The Institute may decline, suspend, or revoke participation or scholarship support for serious or repeated violations. See the Scholarship and Access Program for related terms.
Reporting a concern
If you experience or witness conduct that violates this Code, please contact us. We will review reports seriously and handle them with appropriate discretion.
